Burlotto
Barbera d’Alba
Piedmont, Italy
Found over 170 years ago in the commune of Verduno, Burlotto has become arguably the most sought after Barolo producer. While we wish we could give a bottle of Barolo to you, we decided the next best thing would have to do.
Founded in 1850, now run by fourth and fifth generation winemakers, Burlotto has always stayed true to its ideals. Current winemakers Fabio and Cristina work hard to show terroir through every bottle. The Burlotto family can be contributed to the salvation of the Pelaverga grape, a grape that is thought in some circles to be the parent grape to Nebbiolo.
This Barbera d’Alba is the young red wine of Piedmontese Cuisine. Integrating itself into every facet of every meal. It allows itself to be the star of the show or to be a beautiful companion seamlessly blending into the background.
Pairing: Sausage Ragu and Rigatoni
Fun fact: Giovan Battista Burlotto was the official supplier of wine to the Royal House of Savoy and to the Duke of Abruzzi's Arctic Expedition to the North Pole in 1899-1900.
Poderi Sanguineto
Nobile di Montepulciano
Tuscany, Italy
Situated on top of the legendary hill town of Montepulciano, Sanguineto is worked by Dora Forsoni and her partner Patrizia Castiglioni. Taught by Dora’s father, they bring generations of knowledge of how to tend Prugnolo Gentile, Mammolo, Canaiolo, Nero Toscano and most famously Sangiovese.
Up until 1997, the domaines wines had always been sold as indiscriminate bulk wine when in 1996 Dora found and tasted an unmarked bottle. The bottle was, to our benefit, delicious and from then on the domain decided to start bottling themselves. You wouldn’t be able to tell that Dora is 70 years old as she and her partner are the only ones who work the 11.6 acres of vineyards.
This wine is a blend of 80% Sangiovese with the rest best Cannaiolo Nero and Mammolo. Firm tannins support a classic representation of this wine. Lovely to drink now, lovely to hold on to. The world is your Nobile di Montepulciano.
Pairing: Mushroom and Eggplant Ratatouille (Make sure to get your mushrooms from Adams Mushrooms!)
Fun fact: One of Doras’ favorite “songs” is the sound of wine fermenting. Singing “blip, bloop, blip, blip, blop”, it makes her feel like a child on Christmas morning.
Patrick jasmin
La Chevalière
Northern Rhône, France
With the domaine located along the infamous slopes of the Côte-Rôtie, Patrick Jasmin jokes around calling his work “la galère,” similar to that of a ship’s galley. As the fourth generation wine maker of the Jasmin estate, Patrick remains rooted in (you guessed it), tradition. The business is run by him working the vineyards and making the wine while his business wiz wife crunches the numbers.
The Côte-Rôtie is one of the oldest wine areas in France and one of the most brutal. Thankfully Patrick produces wine with glee and tenacity which shows through in the final product. This wine is 100% Syrah with vines planted in the mid 1990s. Focused on concentration and classic winemaking in large neutral oak barrels, this wine, while being muscular and broad shouldered, still is perfect in the summer time along smoked meats and grilled vegetables.
Pairing: Loose Meat Sandwich
Fun fact: Patrick holds the title of the French National Kart-Cross Champion in 2000 and as of late has developed a new passion for car track racing.
